Job Description

Overview Reading Intervention Teacher at Kansas City Public Schools. This role is to serve as a resource for students in need of reading intervention services, developing small group/individualized lesson plans and materials, conducting instruction, and assessing student performance to guide intervention services. Collaborates with teachers to implement a research-based, differentiated reading intervention program. Responsibilities Provide direct instruction to students identified for reading intervention in individual and/or small group settings. Conduct student assessments to provide targeted interventions. Analyze reading errors to determine scaffolding needs and build a learning progression for student intervention. Establish clear objectives for intervention support and provide written evidence of preparation upon request. Regularly create and conduct formal and informal assessments to monitor student needs, drive instruction, and provide data reports to required staff members. Plan to meet student learning goals, select appropriate literacy strategies, resources, manipulatives, and materials to differentiate instruction; sequence literacy learning experiences and allow multiple ways to demonstrate knowledge and skill. Model thinking strategies that guide students in examining their own thinking. Engage students in understanding and identifying quality work and provide effective feedback to improve literacy outputs. Recognize when student misconceptions affect fluency and comprehension. Create learning environments where individual differences are respected and valued. Collaborate with families, school teachers and staff, and other professionals to promote student growth in literacy. Collaborate with classroom teachers, giving feedback on research-based literacy practices, analyzing data, and making decisions to improve student learning. Participate in staff development focused on literacy instruction, intervention, and assessment; assist staff with learning various assessment techniques in literacy. Engage in professional learning to enhance knowledge in literacy and contribute to professional practice. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications Reading K-12 Certification and/or Language Arts 5-9 (Middle School) and/or 9-12 (High School) Certification Minimum of three (3) years of secondary teaching experience Knowledge of the Missouri Learning Standards Knowledge of the five areas of reading instruction Background experience and knowledge in elementary reading instruction Preferred Qualifications Teaching experience in urban schools Master of Education with Reading Emphasis Experience as a Resource Teacher Experience with curriculum and assessment development Leadership experience Physical Demands The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
