Job Summary

The Facilities Maintenance Mechanic in the Carpentry Shop within the Maintenance & Operations unit of Facilities Development & Operations reports to the Associate Director- Architectural Trades & Auto Services. The role works independently or as part of a team under the general supervision of the Facilities Project Supervisor. The incumbent performs skilled journey-level carpentry and metalworking trades, with strong skills in other trades to conduct preventive and general maintenance, repair, construction and renovation work on building and infrastructure systems. Carpentry and metalworking skills are used to maintain and repair equipment and systems in university buildings and infrastructure to support a clean, safe, and attractive campus environment. The incumbent uses a computerized maintenance system to meet preventive maintenance program objectives and provides safety instructions to unskilled or semi-skilled assistants.

Key Responsibilities
  • Performs at a journey level in at least one trade and assists with basic and advanced level maintenance and repair work for various trades including carpentry, metal work, plumbing, mechanical, and electrical
  • Build, remodel, and maintain various types of facilities, buildings, offices, classrooms, restrooms, sheds, fences and other structures
  • Interpret and work from blueprints, plans, drawings, and specifications, including making rough sketches where needed to facilitate work efforts
  • Perform routine mechanical maintenance
  • Respond to service requests; diagnose problems and make necessary adjustments
  • Operate hand/power tools and certified equipment such as scissor lifts, forklifts, utility carts, and welding equipment
  • Use computerized maintenance management programs to complete work assignments and document efforts, and to research and understand issues as necessary
  • Estimate cost, time and materials of maintenance, repair and renovation work
  • Respond to urgent and/or emergency calls to prevent catastrophic equipment failure, injury, damage or further incident; take appropriate action to mitigate damages and facilitate appropriate repair
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 pounds occasionally
  • Ability to sustain exposure to dusty, noisy environments and inclement weather as necessary to carry out duties
  • Ability to climb to heights in excess of thirty feet
  • Thorough knowledge of methods, materials, equipment and tools used in one of the skilled trades (plumbing, mechanical, electrical, or HVAC & System Controls)
  • Working knowledge of applicable building and safety codes and regulations related to facilities, systems utilities, and renovations
  • Ability to demonstrate journey-level skill in one skilled trade and strong skills in other applicable trades
  • Ability to read, interpret and work from blueprints, plans, drawings and specifications
  • Ability to make rough sketches and estimate cost, time and materials of assigned work
  • Ability to analyze and respond to emergency situations
  • Ability to operate all applicable tools, equipment and systems necessary to perform skilled trades
  • Working knowledge of computerized maintenance and building automation systems
  • Ability to organize assigned work and carry forward assignments based on operational priorities, with a focus on efficiently completing duties within deadlines
  • Ability to communicate effectively and work harmoniously with a diverse group of individuals involved with projects
Required Qualifications
  • Four years of increasingly responsible experience leading to journey-level skills in facility repair and maintenance, or an equivalent combination of training and experience demonstrating journey-level skills
  • Requires a valid California Drivers License for operation of any vehicle or equipment required for the position and in any emergency
  • Must participate in OSHA-required physicals and examinations
License

A valid drivers license is required. Out-of-state candidates selected must obtain a California drivers license within 10 days of hire in accordance with California DMV regulations. Upon hire, the employee must successfully complete the Defensive Driver Training Program provided by the State of California for CSU campuses.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Certification indicating completion of an applicable apprenticeship program
  • Journey-level standing in the carpentry and/or metalworking trades
  • Knowledge of welding and fabrication techniques used in maintenance and repair
  • Five years of journey-level experience in maintenance, repair, construction/fabrication, and installation of carpentry or metalwork systems
Compensation

Classification: Facilities Maintenance Mechanic
Anticipated Hiring Range: $6,274/month - $6,528/month
CSU Salary Range: $5,355/month - $7,801/month
